편하다 means “to be comfortable.”

불편하다 means “to be uncomfortable.”

So far, that makes sense, since 불 (不) can mean “not.”

But then I came across 편안하다 and was confused, because it means “to be at ease.”

If it uses 안, it seems like it would mean something like “not comfortable,” similar to 불편하다.

But instead, it means the opposite.

Sohyun explained that the Hanja for this 안 is different—like the one in 안녕 (安寧)—and it means “peace, calmness, or well-being.”

So 편안하다 (便安하다) means something closer to:

→ “to be comfortably at peace,” or “to feel at ease in a settled way.”

It's been some time since my last post. It's been hectic week for me, and today I'm back with one thing. I have been reflecting on my progress and initially doubted my decision, but I have made a choice. I realized that I am falling behind in my Korean studies, and with only 7 months remaining before the TOPIK exam, I feel unprepared. To continue my learning and stay consistent, I have decided to share my daily grammar lessons with the community , it will also help me to stay active here . Most of these lessons will be based on the beginner level of Korean Grammar in Use Book. 

I will try to write explanations and include my own example sentences. For grammar topics that I find challenging, I may seek help from you guys 😁. I don't exactly know how and when to start but I'll try to start tomorrow! 
And thanks to @Sohyun and @Melkije D Esion I'm learning how to stay consistent and keep going, which is why I chose to share my journey here. Thank you! 

Here I'll focus on Korean expressions, phrases, slangs and idioms !( as for grammar I have another section) .

The purpose of this section is I wanna do 60 days challenge , track my progress and improve my Korean on my own pace.

I'll post what I learned and what I already know also expressions and idioms I saved on my phone many years ago 😅

Day 1: K- Idiom 

○ 마음이 즐거우면 발도 가볍다 

 • Translation: when the mind/heart feels happy, feet are also light. 

• Meaning:  Even the most difficult task feels easy if doing them brings you joy .

Ex) 오늘 피곤했지만 운동하고 나니까 마음이 즐거워서 발도 가볍다. 

Q: 감이 집을 지으면 뭐라고 할까요?

A: 감동!

Translation:

Q: What do you call it when a persimmon (fruit) builds a house?

A: "Gam-dong!" (A pun, since "감동" means "emotionally touched" in Korean, and "감" (gam) means persimmon meanwhile "동" refer to residential buildings.)

Today I did a little review of my flash cards and ttmik book. I am trying to not overwhelm my self by over studying and learning how to just study until I feel good.

I can get overly obsessive when I set up a card review process, and then I stop doing it, so I’m keeping it on the simpler side. Here are the decks I’m using:
 

Sentence mining is based on an idea that once you write and learn 10,000 sentences you will be able to know the language fluently. I have conversations every day in Korean by chat, so I started collecting sentences when there is a word I don’t know. I put it in the sentence mining deck and then Anki Pro uses it to help me learn and remember it. 

Essential is for words I find I need in daily life that I either don’t know yet or can’t remember well. When I come across these, I put them in this deck because I consider them urgent. Like when I realize I don’t know how to say “skin” but really need to be able to say it to communicate. 
 

한자 are root words and I just take these slowly and don’t worry about learning the Chinese character part of them, just the Korean pronunciation and meaning. 

And then Bank is a deck someone else made with fundamental words. This one only has 500 words, and even though I know more than 500 total words, I don’t yet know all of THESE 500 words, especially in both directions. It is much easier to see and recognize a word than to produce it instantly when you need to use it. So I’m going to lean these 500 both directions and then add more from the collection of 6,000. 
 

How about we talk about "추구미" today! This is a very modern slang and so I would imagine that anyone older than maybe 40 may not know it. It might even be a gen z thing, but I am not sure to be honest. In any case, this is a combination word. 추구 means pursuit and 미 means aesthetic. So if we put that together, we get... "your signature style or ideal aesthetic" or in simpler terms, "my/your type" when it comes to anything really. 

It does not have to be just with dating. It can be with lifestyle things too (an organized room is my ideal aesthetic, for example would work). So this is a term more broad than something like 이상형 which typically refers to dating preferences!

Well in Korean, you may say:

손발이 잘 맞다 (hands/feet match well)

찰 떡이다 (this one has to do with Korean rice cakes, I forget the actual story but you can look it up if you want lol)

"오지랖이 넓다"

"귀 얇다"

Any guesses as to what these mean?

"오지랖이 넓다" actually comes from 한복, traditional Korean clothes. The front of the upper piece of clothing is the 오지랖 and 넓다 is a verb, meaning to be big/wide/spacious. So, if the 오지랖 is too wide, it will unnecessarily cover up the bottom part of the outfit. It will be an intrusion! So, what does this idiom mean today? Well, it means to be nosey, stepping into other people's business! 

"귀 얇다"  has the literal meaning of "thin ears" and this one means that you are gullible, easy influenced!

Have you heard these idioms before? 

"국룰(이다)" which is a combination of the Korean 국 meaning country and the English word 룰 or rule. So together it means country rule!

You can think of this as being something that is standard habit or procedure in Korea or the country you are in. For example, you always have to take pictures of your food before you eat anything if you are with friends in Korea! lol! 

Today's slang will be:

"내로남불(이다)" which is the English equivalent of "the pot calling the kettle black" which essentially just means, being hypocritical. 

This slang comes from "내가 하면 로맨스, 남이 하면 불륜" which translates to "If I do it, it is romance, but if someone else does it, it is adultery/cheating." 

Interesting right!? 

이미 엎질러진 물 is today's saying! It literally means "already spilled water" but its usage meaning is; something has already happened and you can not undo it or take it back. 

I really like this saying and I think it can be pretty useful to know! 

'Your Honor' (a play on words with what you call a judge in a courtroom in some countries) goes like this:

1. The person who is 'It' presents a question, or a Korean word or phrase, along with a challenge to solve related to that question, word or phrases.
2. Others try to solve or answer it, typing their responses.
3. If you get it correct, you are 'safe', and you earn 1 point. The scorekeeper keeps track of the score.
4. If all players get it correct, the person who was 'It' must present another question, word, or phrase for everyone to try to solve.
5. This continues until someone gets it wrong, at which time a new round begins and that person becomes 'It' and must present a question, word or phrase to the group.

Rules:

• The point of the game is to challenge your memory and intuition without looking up the answers, so if you don't know the answer, rather than looking it up, make your best guess. Let the game work in your favor by getting some things wrong based on the best guess you could make...it will prepare your mind to learn what the correct answer should have been, and you will retain that information better than if you had answered correctly in the first place. That's the theory we are testing, anyway.

• The person who is 'It' makes the determination who is correct and incorrect (the 'It' person needs to have researched the correct answer when preparing their question, word or phrase, so they are able to determine who answers it correctly).
• If someone disagrees with the 'It' person's determination, it can be appealed to the Squad hosts for a decision (in this case, that is @Sohyun and @Melkije D Esion
• Honorifics are the focus of the game, not other grammatical elements such as the use of particles, word order of a sentence, spelling, or other areas of focus. While it is okay to help one another with these other parts as well, the are not part of the criteria to tell whether a question was correct or incorrect. Likewise, there are sometimes several correct ways to write a sentence or to choose between grammatical forms to express a concept, and the focus of this game is not on which of those to use, it is just on the honorific element.
• You must post your answer to a question within 24 hours of its original posting time in order to be eligible to remain int the round.
• Have fun, and remember the purpose is to interact, learn, and to try!

Example:

• The person who is it posts a question word or phrase for the group to consider. Here is an example of each:
  • Question: Something that quizzes the knowledge of the game's participants
    Example: Are Korean Honorifics considered to be the same thing as Politeness, or are they two separate concepts?
  • Word: The person who is 'It' provides a Korean word along with some type of challenge related to that word having to do with honorifics.
    Example: The word is '있다'. Provide the honorific equivalent of this word. (Answer is 계시다)
  • Phrase: The person who is 'It' provides a Korean word along with some type of challenge related to that word having to do with honorifics.
    Example: The phrase is '선생님은 오늘 점심을 먹었어요?'. Rewrite this sentence in a way that reflects correct use of honorifics. (One answer is 선생님은 오늘 점심을 드셨나요? with the key element being the use of the verb 드시다 for 'to eat').

I am sweating wet! 😰

I just went on Google and looked for children story pdf. I picked the story of "The Tortoise and The Hare" cause everyone knows the story so it might not be that difficult. When I first read the introduction of the scene; I almost didn't understand anything. So I first translated it to have an idea of what's happening. Still did do good enough. But the conversations was comparatively easier. But not knowing the meaning of certain words and how to pronounce certain Sunil's was still a bit tough. I do have random pauses as I was processing what I just read or trying to club the words together that I just butchered. The audio is quite lengthy but... Whatever. 

I figured since I can't do proper studying for Korean; I might as well try to read. I have read and written korean song lyrics before but these are stories and their is certain way they need to be spoken so the listeners can visualize. I did try to dramatise the combo but that's it🤭. Here goes nothing but comes courage (I just made it😅).
